Danish Pharma major,
Novo Nordisk is exploring the option of setting
up of a manufacturing base in India with a view
to producing insulin. The company is exploring India
as a base for the production of high value products
because of the cost advantage. Plans however have
yet to be crystallized. |

Nortel plans to get line and trunk cards made in
India |

Nortel Networks
plans to outsource the manufacturing of line and
trunk cards from India.
The decision will depend on an assessment of the
unique signalling protocols relevant to Indian telecom
networks. At present, the Company outsources its
line card requirement, mainly through partners in
China and Mexico. |

BPO unit in Hyderabad likely to hire 1000 employees

Bank of America
plans to set up a captive BPO outfit in Hyderabad,
which will begin operations next month. The centre
will employ 1,000 people and any expansion of the
BPO’s scope of activities will depend on how
the initial set-up progresses. |

| Turin
Networks opens development centre in India

US based, Turin Networks, Inc., has opened a
development center in Bangalore, India. A developer
and supplier of multi service optical transport
platforms for telecommunications carriers worldwide,
Turin will invest $2 million in the new center,
in the next few years.
In doing so the Company hopes to draw upon the
region’s skilled software professionals
to enhance the design and development of the Traverse
product line. India is also an important part
of Turin's market development strategy.

| Cornhill
Direct and Barclays to direct calls to India
|

Two more UK Companies- Cornhill Direct, and leading
bank Barclays- are likely to direct work to India.
Cornhill Direct, a Bristol-based insurance major,
is starting its own offshore company at Thiruvananthapuram,
Kerala in April, where it will initially run five
projects, employing 50 people in all.
Barclays bank plans to off-load 1,000 computer
workers to management consultants Accenture. Reports
say a £450m, six-year contract is being
considered. If it goes ahead staff in Poole, Bexleyhealth
and Radbroke will all transfer to Accenture; but
half the work, around 500 jobs, could go to India.

| Progeon
to recruit 500+ employees in Bangalore and Pune
|

Progeon, the business
process outsourcing arm (BPO) of Infosys Technologies,
is adding close to 500 employees at its centres
in Bangalore and Pune. Progeon is active in domain
areas such as banking, securities and brokerage,
insurance, telecom, finance and accounts and currently
employs 1,300 people at its two units in Bangalore.
The Pune unit, which has 350 seat capacity is yet
to start operation.
The company expects the total headcount to touch
1,500 by March, 2004.
